Hospice of Hilo invites the community to its 11th annual Celebration of Life, a free community event slated for May 2 at Wailoa State Park.
The event will feature Hospice of Hilo’s 2.3-mile Walk to Remember starting at 5 p.m. followed by food, live entertainment and the launching of the floating luminaries at dusk on the Wailoa River. Registration for the celebration begins at 3:30 p.m.
“Every year, the community comes out for our Celebration of Life,” said An Umamoto, Hospice of Hilo development, public relations and education coordinator. “It’s really meaningful and a great way to remember loved ones that have passed, honor the life they lived, and the lives they touched.”
The celebration’s brightest moment is the Lights of Remembrance. As the sun goes down, individually designed luminaries are released onto the Wailoa River and light up the darkness of the night.
“This is a really special opportunity to celebrate life and share in remembrance of loved ones,” said Hospice of Hilo CEO Brenda S. Ho. “I want to encourage everyone to come early and hand-design luminaries dedicated to loved ones, listen to the live music and let the kids play on the huge grassy area of the park. It really is a beautiful event.”
Luminary sales are underway and will continue through the day of the event. Pre-sale luminaries are $20. Luminaries cost $25 the day of the event.
Individuals and teams can get registration forms for the Walk to Remember at www.hospiceofhilo.org.
